Job Description

A medical coder's job is to translate a patient's medical records into medical codes. These codes are used by healthcare providers and insurance companies for billing and record-keeping. The specific codes assigned determine how the medical office bills the insurance company for the patient's visit. 

Here are some of the responsibilities of a medical coder:

Transcribe patient information: Transcribe patient information into the appropriate medical codes 

Ensure accuracy: Ensure the accuracy of the medical records and the codes used 

Follow guidelines: Comply with medical coding guidelines and policies 

Analyze medical records: Analyze medical records and identify documentation deficiencies 

Review documentation: Review and verify documentation supports diagnoses, procedures, and treatment results 

Identify discrepancies: Identify discrepancies, potential quality of care, and billing issues 

Research and analyze: Research and analyze data needs for reimbursement 

Prepare monthly reports: Collect information made by the physician from different sources to prepare monthly reports
