Awareness - Intern
When searching for internship opportunities, you'll often come across specific terms and conditions that employers set. These can vary depending on the company, the role, and the location. However, there are some common themes and key components to look for in internship terms and conditions. Here's an overview of what to watch out for:
Duration and Hours
Start and End Dates: The specific start and end dates for the internship, as well as the expected number of weeks or months.
Working Hours: Whether the internship is full-time or part-time, and the number of hours you’re expected to work per week.
Flexibility: Some internships may offer flexible working hours, while others might require you to follow a strict schedule.
Compensation
Paid vs. Unpaid: Many internships are paid, while others are unpaid (common in non-profit sectors or smaller organisations). Ensure you're clear about this.
Benefits: If it's a paid internship, check for additional perks such as transportation reimbursement, meals, or health benefits.
Overtime: If applicable, whether you will be compensated for overtime hours worked.
Job Responsibilities
Role Expectations: A clear outline of the duties and responsibilities expected from the intern during the internship period.
Supervision: Whether there will be a mentor or supervisor overseeing your progress and helping you learn.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Eligibility Criteria: Certain internships may require you to be a student or have a specific academic background or experience.
Skills and Experience: Look for any specified skills (e.g., software knowledge, languages spoken, etc.) needed to apply for the position.
Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure
Many internships require interns to sign a confidentiality agreement. This ensures that any proprietary information or business secrets you come across are kept confidential.
You may also be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), especially for industries involving sensitive data.
Intellectual Property
Ownership of Work: If you create any work (like reports, designs, code), the terms may clarify whether the employer or the intern owns that intellectual property.
Often, employers retain ownership of anything created during the internship.
Termination/Resignation
Termination Clause: Terms about what happens if you or the employer decides to end the internship early. This may cover notice periods, reasons for termination, and any other processes that need to be followed.
Early Resignation: If you wish to leave the internship early, you may be required to give a certain amount of notice.
Legal Rights and Protections
Workplace Laws: Make sure the internship complies with local labor laws, including working conditions, safety regulations, and rights for interns.
Insurance: Some internships may provide accident insurance or require you to be covered by your own insurance policy.
Performance Evaluation
Feedback and Evaluation: Employers may provide periodic evaluations of your performance and offer feedback, which could be valuable for your career growth.
References: Some internships may offer to provide a reference or letter of recommendation upon completion.
Post-Internship Opportunities
Full-time Employment: Check if the internship offers a potential pathway to a full-time position or if there is any discussion of employment after the internship ends.
Networking and Alumni: Some companies offer networking events, career development workshops, or connections with past interns.
