Samancor's Kroondal operations are part of its Western Chrome Mines (WCM) and include both underground and opencast mining activities, with the opencast mine being located on the Waterkloof Section near the towns of Kroondal and Rustenburg. The opencast mine is a proposed project involving the Waterkloof Section of the farm Waterkloof 305 JQ.
